| Q: What is a less
than lethal weapon? |
|
The term
less than lethal weapon refers to weapons that go from bean bag shot
shells or rubber bullets, to electronic devices like taser and stun
guns. Their main purpose is to temporarily incapacitate, repel, confuse
and/or restrain a person from doing harm to others and themselves. This
devices don't cause permanent damage, however, responsible and proper
use of this devices is required. When you receive your stun gun or
pepper spray please read the manufacturers instructions for proper use.
Law enforcement and security personal use it as
an alternative to lethal weapons. |
| Q: What is a stun
gun? |
|
A stun gun is a device that
generates a high-voltage, low-amperage charge to disrupt (confuse) the
nervous system. They typically consist of a battery, transformers,
capacitors and electrodes.
The transformers boost the electrical energy from the battery
increasing dramatically the voltage output, but at the same time
reducing the amperage. The current charges a capacitor to accumulate
energy, which then delivers the energy to the electrodes or prongs. |
| Q: How a stun gun
works? |
|
When the attacker is hit with a
stun gun the charge will make the muscles work so hard in a little
amount of time, but without any particular movement (the body trembles),
this will deplete the attacker's energy leaving him too weak to move.
The other thing that happens is the temporary shut down or reset of the
nervous system. When the charge is applied it mixes with the normal
electrical signals of the brain, so the attacker may become confused and
unbalanced, leaving him temporarily paralyzed.
Since it is high voltage, the electrical charge will pass through the
attacker's clothing, but will not pass through you, even if the attacker
is touching you. |
| Q: What is the
difference between a stun gun and the taser gun? |
|
Taser guns work behind the same
principles as stun guns. Taser guns have a compressed nitrogen cartridge
that projects two probes 15 feet at a speed of 180 feet per second. The
probes are connected by a thin wire to the taser gun. Then the
electrical charge is transmitted through the wires to the probes
delivering the charge. Other difference is that taser guns use
Electro-Muscular Disruption technology, which means a more powerful
electrical signal. A stun gun can produce 7-14 Watt of power to
interfere with the electro-muscular system, the taser gun operates in
the 18 to 26 Watt
electrical signal to completely override the central nervous system
and directly control the skeletal muscles. This more power allows to
physically debilitate a target regardless of pain
tolerance or mental focus.
The taser gun also has probes attached to the gun that can be applied
to the attacker directly.

| Q: What is a pepper
spray? |
|
Pepper spray is a chemical agent
which is used in crowd control and personal self-defense just to name a
few. The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is
a chemical derived from the fruit of plants in the Capsicum
genus, including the chilli peppers. Pepper spray is also known as OC
spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum") or OC gas.
The Scoville scale is a measure of the hotness of a chilli peppers.
As an example, a jalapeņo pepper has a rating of 2,500 to 8,000
Scoville Heat Units (SHU) and a cayenne pepper has a rating of 30,000 to
50,000 SHU. This means that the capsaicin present in the cayenne
pepper would have to be diluted 50,000 times before the capsaicin
present is undetectable.
Most pepper sprays range around the 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units. |
| Q:
Of what is made the pepper spray? |
|
Pepper sprays are made
from all-natural ingredients - chilies and oil. So, it is non toxic, it
will not catch on fire, and although it won't break down or become weaker
as it gets older, it may - depending on the size of the can - slowly leak
out over time (a year or so).
The chilies used to make self-defense spray include: Jalapenos, Chiletpin,
and Cayenne. The best, as in hottest, most effective for stopping an
attacker - and my favorite to eat - are called: Habaneros.
A real ring burner!
The active ingredient taken from chilies is called: "oleoresin
capsicum," or OC. In the wonderful world of horticulture, OC is a
term used to describe chili peppers. OC is oily stuff, making it hard to
wash off if you get it on your skin. Plus, it doesn't mix well with water,
which is why it is mixed with oil. |
| Q: How pepper spray
works? |
|
Pepper spray is an irritant,
causing severe pain when in contact with skin. It also acts as an
inflammatory agent, causing inflammation in the mucous membranes of the
eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Temporary blindness occurs on contact
with eyes along with intense burning causing them to swell shut. Loss of
balance and muscle coordination may occur along with severe skin
irritation, difficulty breathing, and gagging. The length of the effects
depend on the strength of the spray but the average full effect lasts
around thirty to forty-five minutes with the mitigated effects lasting
for hours. |
| Q: What is the
difference between the MaceTM
and a pepper spray? |
|
Mace is a brand that uses pepper
spray in several of its products. Mace uses several irritants in it's
products like CN tear gas (chloroacetophenone), which is an eye and skin
irritant. In some of it's product it uses a mix of several irritants
like pepper spray and tear gas along with a UV die. The UV die marks the assailant and may aid in
identification once apprehended. |
